9 Questions with Laya Spa Owner and Yogini Alessandra de Oliveira

December 03, 2015

What drew you to wellness?
Initially started in the esthetics field because I grew up around hair and beauty. The more I learned about wellness, the more I realized that in order to achieve your highest potential of beauty, it's necessary to integrate healthy living, relaxation and a balanced diet. This is where I began my search for the path that made the most sense to me; Ayurveda.

When did you open your spa?
I opened Laya in 2012 but operated on a smaller scale since 2004.
Tell us a bit about your spa offerings?
Laya is a full scale spa offering all of the essential spa treatments as well as Ayurveda inspired treatments. We also offer yoga because we believe that feeling good is directly linked to looking good. The products we use are natural and our treatments are catered to individual needs and ayurveda constitutions.
1. What's your favorite way to move in your body (sweat)?
A deep, intense yoga practice & I also love spinning.
2. Do you have a daily wellness ritual?
Yes. My daily ritual is an ayurveda practice called snedana. This is a ritual where warm oil is spread all over the body to achieve grounding, balance and and overall calming feeling.
3. What's essential to your practice?
Spirituality. I integrate mantra and meditation to my yoga practice and if I have a day where a full practice seems impossible, I never go a day without  reciting my favorite Mantras.

4. How do you start your day?
On good days I start my day with a yoga practice even if it's just 45min of movement. Every morning  I give myself 10-15 mins of sitting in silence in front of my home altar. I light a candle and incense and I recite a mantra depending on the day and what is happening in my life.
5. Whats your favorite Zen Nomad piece and why?
I love everything that the line offers. It's light, comfortable and also stylish. What I love about Zen Nomad is that it is designed for all shapes and sizes and you feel good wearing it, no matter how your feel physically or energetically on a given day.
The piece I wear the most is the Warrior Yoga Leggings. They are easy to slip on and I can dress it up a little or just wear it casually.
6. What's your dream destination/next trip?
My dream destination is India. I have never been and I love everything about the culture.  I just need time.
7.What's on your movement/ getting into your space playlist?
Oh so many to mention. I have a wide variety ranging from basic tabla drumming to mantra singing and I also love deep & slow electronic music.
8.What's your secret to staying balanced?
Good food. Daily movement. Spirituality & good belly laughs.
9. What are you most grateful for?

We are posting a blog post from Sarah over at Hum.life because it's a beautiful post on creating a home practice.

Yoga classes are excellent places to learn the poses and sequences, to find the correct alignment for your body, and to find inspiration. But as renowned teacher Rodney Yee says*, “Without making it your own, yoga doesn’t mean anything. It’s just an exercise class.”
